Upplevelser av simuleringsträning vid vård av akut sjuka barn2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Children are identified as an extra vulnerable group to be affected by mistakes in the healthcare. To be able to reduce this risk, the healthcare staff must be able to cooperate in teams and have good communication skills. Simulation based training is described as a method where teamwork and communication is trained in a safe environment that resembles reality. Aim: To describe the healthcare staff’s experiences of simulation based training when caring for acute ill children in a pediatric clinic.

Method: A qualitative interview study was implemented at a pediatric clinic at a medium-sized hospital in Sweden. A content analysis according to Graneheim and Lundman (2004) was performed to analyze the interviews. Results: According to the participants simulation based training gave them more knowledge about what was anticipated of them in there profession when caring for acute ill children. This knowledge gave them a feeling of security and calmed them down in an acute event with an ill child. Training in multiprofessional team created an opportunity to develop team work. To communicate in a distinct way and to mediate thoughts was a great lesson learned from simulation based training. The participants expressed that they learned the most during the reflection, where they saw on film how they acted during the simulation, and then got to discuss how the team worked. Conclusion: Simulation based training gave the participants a greater security when caring for the most severely acute ill children. Through improved communication and a greater knowledge of their own and others tasks in a team, the participants experienced that the teamwork improved after simulation based training. The improved knowledge came after the participants had done a scenario and then discussed and reflected about their acting during the reflection.

Rights out of Reach?: Justifications of Intellectual Property Rights in Relation to the Fulfilment of Socioeconomic Human Rights2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis, three perspectives on the justification of intellectual property rights are investigated in the light of conflicting socioeconomic human rights. This is done by using a comparative method, where the perspectives chosen are reviewed through the lense of rights as legitimate claims, as well as accessibility of rights. The purpose is to review as to how the ownership of ideas and inventions can be justified in relation to the socioeconomic challenges faced in many parts of the world. The principal research question is: How can intellectual property rights be justified and how can it be evaluated against the backdrop of socioeconomic rights and moral obligations? To answer this question, I posed three sub-questions: First, how are intellectual property rights justified in the existing research chosen as an entry point for this thesis? Drawn from this, how can the justification of intellectual property rights be understood as a moral concern in a socioeconomically unequal world? Taking a cue from this, what questions need to be answered to better understand the transnational moral obligations linked to intellectual property rights? By reviewing the perspectives presented on the justification of intellectual property rights, I make three concluding statements — intellectual property rights cannot be justified in cases where they affect other individuals’ socioeconomic rights negatively; excessive benefits gained for creators is not morally reasonable; and the unequal distribution of power and opportunities in relation to transnational moral responsibilities need to be recognised.

Hvordan ville Jesus anmeldt dette spillet?: – en studie av kristne videospillsnettsider gjennom perspektivet medialisering av religion.2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to show how the religious worldview of the christian gaming site Geeks under Grace shapes their view on videogames and gaming culture. The goal is to understand the material through Hjarvards theories of mediatization of religion (2011), more specifically the aspects ”Media as language” and ”Media as Enviroment”. The following research questions are formulated to conduit this research: ”How do the authors and editors behind the website Geeks under Grace use religion and religious terms in understanding video games?” and ”How can the website Geeks under Grace be understood based on the dynamics ”Media as language” and ”media as environment”, according to the perspective mediatization of religion”. Through textual analysis of video game reviews and essays about christianity and gaming the study shows an individualistic form for christianity present in the material. Furthermore, it shows how the website makes frames and environments where they combine elements from both the world of gaming and the world of christianity to try to make a sense of belonging, and at the same time try to teach religious values through the use of videogames.

Vem har rätt till äktenskap? Frågan som splittrar Europa2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Should same sex couples have a right to marriage? This question has been debated frequently during the last two decades. The legislation across Europe shows a divide between countries that have legalised same-sex marriage and countries that have introduced constitutional bans on same-sex marriage. Using a theory that emphasises the moral dimension of human rights, I examine the right to marriage in the European Convention of Human Rights from an ethical perspective. The purpose of this thesis is threefold. The first aim is to investigate how the right to marriage is regulated in The European Convention on Human Rights and how its interpreted by The European Court of Human Rights. The second aim is to identify and assess central arguments in the debate about same sex marriage from a human rights perspective. The third and final aim is to perform a critical examination of the right to marriage in the European Convention of Human rights from an ethical perspective.

This study shows that The European Court of Human Rights is cautious in its interpretation of the right to marriage and has chosen to await a European consensus before including same-sex couples in the right to marriage. By looking closer at the evolutionary interpretation of the convention, as discussed by George Letsas & Kanstantsin Dzehtsiarou, I conclude that this interpretation should be based on certain moral principles. Through the examination of central arguments in the same-sex marriage debate I draw the conclusion that same sex couples have a moral right to marriage. Thus, this thesis suggests that there is a contradiction between the moral dimension of human rights and The European Court of Human Rights interpretation of the right to marriage for same-sex couples. I therefore argue that there should be an ethical demand to include same sex-couples in the right to marriage.

    ABSTRACT

Background Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is an ancient tradition with strong ties to cultural and ethnic identity. More than 200 million women and girls are estimated to be exposed, and about 3.9 million more girls are at risk each year. The proportion of women from countries where female genital mutilation is common, and which gives birth to children in Sweden has increased with an increased immigration. Female genital mutilation is internationally considered as a violation of human rights and a violation of women's and children's rights.

Aim To compare the incidence and risk of perinatal complications among women with a diagnosis of FGM with women without this diagnosis who has given birth to a child in Sweden during the years 2007 - 2017.

    Method A population-based cohort study.

Results The main result of this study is that children born of women with an FGM-diagnosis have a significantly increased risk of low apgar scores, being born Small for Gestational Age, convulsions, perinatal death and prolonged pregnancy could be observed.

Conclusion FGM is associated with a number of serious perinatal complications. The greatest risk was seen between female genital mutilation and being born Small for Gestational Age, prolonged pregnancy and intrauterine fetal death. These relationships were robust regardless of which country the woman was born. It can be concluded that women with an FGM diagnosis and their newborn children belong to a risk group. It is very important to work preventively to protect these women and children's health.

Accuracy and Reliability of X-ray Measurements in the Cervical Spine2020In: Asian Spine Journal, ISSN 1976-1902, E-ISSN 1976-7846, Vol. 14, no 2, p. 169-176Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Study Design: This study is a post hoc analysis of a multicenter prospective randomized controlled trial which compared artificial disc replacement and anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. Purpose: Useful radiographic parameters for assessing cervical alignment include the Cobb angles, T1 slope (TS), occipitocervical inclination (OCI). K-line tilt (KLT), and cervical sagittal vertical axis (cSVA). This study aimed to determine measurement accuracy and reliability for these parameters. Overview of Literature: Various authors have assessed repeatability by comparing different methods of measurement, but knowledge of measurement error and minimal detectable change is scarce. Methods: We evaluated 75B lateral cervical radiographs. One medical student and one spine surgeon (i.e., measured x2 within 4 weeks) independently measured the parameters obtaining 5,850 values. Standard error of measurement (SEm) and minimum detectable change (MDC) were calculated for each parameter. The accuracy and reliability of the Cobb angle measurements were calculated for the different types of angles: cervical lordosis, prosthesis angle, segmental angle with two hone surfaces (SABB), and segmental angle with one bone and one metal surface. Reliability was determined with intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Results: SEm was 1.8 degrees and MDC was 5.0 degrees for the Cobb angle, with an intraobserver/interobserver ICC of 0.958/0.8B6. All the different subtypes of Cobb angles had an ICC higher than 0.950, except SABB (intraobserver/interobserver ICC of 0.922/0.716). The most accurate and reliable measurement was for KLT. Conclusions: This study provides normative data on SEm and MDC for Cobb angles, T1S, KLT, OCI, and cSVA in cervicalcervicai lateral radiographs. Reliability was excellent for all parameters except SABB (e.g., good).

Route Planning for Heavy Vehicles on Real World Maps2020Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Fast route planning for a standard car is well explored, lots of research, and many algorithms exist. For trucks or other heavy vehicles, the available research and quick algorithm alternatives dwindle. This thesis focuses on available alternatives for trucks and other vehicles with attributes hindering them from traversing parts of the road network. Attributes like height are one among many, which can hinder a vehicle on its path. These attributes can vary greatly and is the reason why known solutions can’t be applied. Many well-known solutions rely partially on precalculated data regarding the shortest path for its performance. Precalculating for all possible combinations of attributes is not practical due to the number of possible configurations and the amount of computing needed for each one.

The implemented solution is derived from multiple existing solutions and was evaluated on a graph representing Sweden’s road network. The solution is sufficiently fast to allow commercial use and allows changes to the road network with nightly updates. The solution is based on trying to predict which roads are more important when searching for the shortest path. With this knowledge, a search for the shortest path can be said to prioritize the before mentioned roads, which results in it finding its goal faster.

Creating and Improving Machine Learning Algorithms for Plant Disease Identification2020Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In forestry and agricultural crop growing there has always been a need to identify plant diseases. The purpose of this is to faster remove a harmful plant within a larger group to reduce its effect on the crop yield. Currently, the major way to identify plant diseases is through manual labor where an plant pathology expert identifies diseases by looking at the plant. The aim of this project is to explore how image analysis can be utilised for faster identification of plant diseases. The report will also present descriptions of different relevant plant diseases, the relevant data sets that have been used, and the validity of the results.

Multi laboratory evaluation of ReaScan TBE IgM rapid test, 2016 to 20172020In: Eurosurveillance, ISSN 1025-496X, E-ISSN 1560-7917, Vol. 25, no 12, p. 27-36, article id 1900427Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a potentially severe neurological disease caused by TBE virus (TBEV). In Europe and Asia, TBEV infection has become a growing public health concern and requires fast and specific detection. Aim: In this observational study, we evaluated a rapid TBE IgM test, ReaScan TBE, for usage in a clinical laboratory setting. Methods: Patient sera found negative or positive for TBEV by serological and/or molecular methods in diagnostic laboratories of five European countries endemic for TBEV (Estonia, Finland, Slovenia, the Netherlands and Sweden) were used to assess the sensitivity and specificity of the test. The patients' diagnoses were based on other commercial or quality assured in-house assays, i.e. each laboratory's conventional routine methods. For specificity analysis, serum samples from patients with infections known to cause problems in serology were employed. These samples tested positive for e.g. Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus and Anaplasma phagocytophilum, or for flaviviruses other than TBEV, i.e. dengue, Japanese encephalitis, West Nile and Zika viruses. Samples from individuals vaccinated against flaviviruses other than TBEV were also included. Altogether, 172 serum samples from patients with acute TBE and 306 TBE IgM negative samples were analysed. Results: Compared with each laboratory's conventional methods, the tested assay had similar sensitivity and specificity (99.4% and 97.7%, respectively). Samples containing potentially interfering antibodies did not cause specificity problems. Conclusion: Regarding diagnosis of acute TBEV infections, ReaScan TBE offers rapid and convenient complementary IgM detection. If used as a stand-alone, it can provide preliminary results in a laboratory or point of care setting.

Ingaröåsens lämplighet för återinfiltration av vatten från sjön Återvallsträsk, Värmdö kommun2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The question about groundwater in today’s society is a controversial subject where the current climate change leads to more extreme weather and the society has to increase the readiness to it.

Värmdö kommun has taken action to this and has given Geoveta the work to determine if it is possible to re-infiltrate water from the lake Återvallsträsk into the esker on Ingarö. This bachelor’s work is a small project within the larger one and aiming to investigate if the esker on Ingarö is suitable for re-infiltration from the lake Återvallsträsk. This work includes a literature study in order to get information about the structure of the esker and origin and problems linked to it used for landfills and gravel pits. It also includes a field study where soil and water samples were taken to be analyzed in a chemistry lab and for dry sieving to see what the samples contains and how the particle size distribution is formed. The material in the esker contains mostly sand and some gravel and the quality turned out fine. The quality in the lake turned out to not be so good, containing elevated levels of bacteria and organic material.

The conclusion is that the esker is suited for re-infiltration of lake water, but the lake needs to be continuously tested again and further analyzed and determine if the elevated levels of organic material and bacteria can be reduced.

Fracture characterization in magmatic rock, a case study of the Sosa-dyke (Neuquén Basin, Argentina)2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

There are many examples worldwide were fossil magmatic intrusions influence the local water and energy supply. Due to that intrusions can act as a conductor and a reservoir, but also as a barrier for fluids and gases in the ground. The decisive feature between conductor or barrier in an intrusion is its fracture network. Hence it is of paramount importance to characterize an intrusion’s fracture network and thus its permeability. However, other than through boreholes magmatic intrusions are rather inaccessible and very little is known about their influence on aquifers and reservoir rocks in the underground. It is therefore important to increase the knowledge of magmatic intrusion by investigate the intrusions that are accessible for us at ground surface. In this study, photos from a case study about the Sosa dyke have been used to map and characterizes the fractures of the Sosa dyke, which is an accessible vertical magmatic intrusion and a part of the Chachahuén volcano complex in the southwestern parts of Argentina. The photos that were used are taken with an UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle), and to analyze the photos, map the fractures and produce the results, software as Agisoft Metashape, MOVE™ and MATLAB with the toolbox FracPaQ was used. The intrusion has two distinct fracture sets, one that is perpendicular to the intrusion margins and one that stretches parallel with the intrusion. The connectivity of the fractures is low, and since the permeability of the fractures largely depends on the connectivity, it is also low. The fracture set that is perpendicular to the intrusion margin is what’s called cooling fractures, which is created as the magma in the intrusion cools. This causes the magma to contract and break, forming fractures perpendicular to the inward migrating solidification front. The fracture set that is parallel with the intrusion is caused by minerals in the magma flow being affected by friction from the intrusion margins. This causes the minerals in the magma to elongate in the direction of flow along the sides of the dyke, creating foliation, enabling fractures to propagate along. These fracture sets are poorly connected which concludes that the mapped area of the Sosa-dyke has a low permeability.

    Abstract [en]

We classify generalized tilting modules and full exceptional sequences for the family of quasi-hereditary quotients of type A zig-zag algebras and for a related family of algebras. We also give a characterization of these quotients as quasi-hereditary algebras with simple preserving duality that are "close" to self-injective algebras.

Approaching Female Genital Cutting/s on a Community-Based Level in Sweden: An Analysis of the Agenda-Setting Role of Swedish Civil Society Organisations2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The practice of female genital cutting/s (FGC) has been under national scrutiny in Sweden for decades. Besides strong laws and policies enforced by the Swedish government, civil society organisations have played an important role in addressing the subject of FGC in Sweden. The purpose of this research is to examine what roles and functions civil society organisations assume as they tackle the practice of FGC. Based on semi-structured interviews conducted with employees and volunteers from civil society organisations that address the practice on a daily basis, this study sheds light on the possibilities and challenges civil society organisations face when they approach the question of FGC in Sweden.

This research finds that civil society organisations carry a lot of responsibility in terms of tackling FGC in Sweden, as governmental efforts are perceived to be insufficient. Criticism against the Swedish government is first and foremost directed to the lack of knowledge and understanding on FGC within authorities and to the lack of grassroot efforts together with diaspora communities. Thus, this examination shows how civil society organisations engage and provide complementary efforts. First, civil society organisations raise awareness and shed light on the complexity on the practice of FGC within several authorities to secure that knowledge about the practice is maintained. Second, civil society organisations strive to involve, engage and empower individuals on grassroot levels by creating safe and familiar spaces to talk about FGC. Finally, local efforts provided by civil society organisations aim to empower people affected by the practice of FGC to make their voices heard and to represent themselves. In conclusion, this research demonstrates that civil society organisations hold vital complementary roles in relation to the Swedish state in terms of addressing the practice of FGC in Sweden.

A Conception of Human Dignity: A study about human dignity as a guiding moral principle in the implementation and conflict of human rights2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to develop a fruitful conception of human dignity, a conception that can be used as a guiding moral principle when trying to resolve the conflict of rights. Specifically, the question that this study attempts to answer is what is a fruitful conception of human dignity and how can it be used to deal with concrete issues pertaining to human rights? Two reports from special rapporteurs propose two different courses of action regarding the implementation of the right to protection of property, and this is the conflict that the proposed conception of human dignity tries to resolve. To develop a conception of human dignity a broad conception of human dignity is initially developed, through the usage of a Rawlsian reflective equilibrium, and it is further developed through a combination of a reflective equilibrium, examination of the conception in relation to overall coherence with the human rights tradition, and a consequence analysis. The latter is done by utilizing a consequence analysis with the aforementioned courses of action being applied in a specific case, the case of Tanzania.

By using a consequence analysis, a proposed conception of human dignity and a reflective equilibrium the conception of human dignity could be developed further and contribute to resolve the specific conflict of rights that could be found in the reports of the special rapporteurs. The conclusion drawn was that both of the proposed courses of action, regarding the implementation of the right to the protection of property and in relation to the proposed conception of human dignity, had desirable and less desirable consequences. Therefore, a third way was proposed that sought to bridge the gap between both courses of action, by combining elements of both, and to strengthen the condition-dignity for the parties affected.

Att födas död: Skugginstitutionalism, Nekropolitik, Framing & Prekaritet2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis I examine precarity and necropolitics in the context of a religious institution namely the Jehovah’s witnesses. I specifically examine the conditions of LGBTI-children by the use of framing and the Jehovah’s witnesses own published material. I apply central concepts from Judith Butler’s and Achille Mbembe’s theories on precarity and necropolitics in order to explain what it means to not be born precarious and to explain Jehovah’s witnesses stand on homosexuality. I also develop and test my own theoretical framework that there are two types of institutions; institutions and shadow institutions in which death is distributed in the latter. I also develop a methodology from which these institutions can be distinguished.

The results show that the theories of Judith Butler, Achille Mbembe and my own theory on shadow institutions are indeed compatible and are united in a sort of necroprecarity. My results also show that there is a way to distinguish totalitarian and extremist groups from democratic groups by the use of framing and my theory of shadow institutions. My thesis also highlights the importance of anti-integration for people existing in a non-living state.

This thesis offers a new methodology and can therefore be seen as a first step towards knotting together groups and organizations such as political extremist groups, criminal gangs, dictatorships and religious cults under the umbrella of shadow institutions. Which by itself can be the foundation for a new field of research. By distinguishing institutions from shadow institutions this methodology can be seen as a tool to counteract anti-democratic movements in order to create a more peaceful and stable society.

Climate Justice and the Paris Agreement: Dimensions of Climate Justice in the Nationally Determined Contributions2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Climate change is a critical threat to all the countries of the world today, not least because of the severe human rights infringements it may well lead to. However, although climate change is a collective, global challenge, there are considerable inequalities regarding contribution to cause and burden of the effects. Those suffering the most from the effects of climate change tend to be least responsible for the emissions causing it. The theoretical concept of climate justice aims to address these injustices, between different countries as well as societal groups and generations. To contribute to the understanding of how this concept is present in the global climate debate today, this thesis examines a selection of the Paris Agreement parties’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) from a perspective of climate justice. The analysis is based on a theoretical framework developed by Andrea Schapper, focusing on three dimensions of climate justice – international, intra-societal and intergenerational. Through this framework, a total of 36 NDCs are studied, the top and bottom three countries for each world region based on levels of cumulative CO2-emissions. The aim of the case selection has been to obtain a variation regarding development status, vulnerability to the effects of climate change, levels of greenhouse gas emissions and geographical location of the studied countries.

The results of the study show that all the dimensions are present in at least some of the studied NDCs, but to a very different extent. Primarily, the parties discuss the issue of international justice. Intra-societal justice is touched upon quite frequently but very few bring up the matter of intergenerational justice. Moreover, all three dimensions are predominantly handled by countries classified as ”developing” (according to the UN statistics division).  This implies that climate justice is a higher priority for the most vulnerable to and least responsible for climate change, which is problematic for many reasons. Above all, it indicates that rich, industrialized countries are reluctant to take responsibility for their current and historical emissions, as well as the effect those emissions have on others.

Purging Sensitive Data in Logs Using Machine Learning2020Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis investigates how to remove personal data from logs using machine learning when rule-based scripts are not enough and manual scanning is too extensive.

Three types of machine learning models were created and compared. One word model using logistic regression, another word model using LSTM and a sentence model also using LSTM.

Data logs were cleaned and annotated using rule-based scripts, datasets from various countries and dictionaries from various languages. The created dataset for the sentence based model was imbalanced, and a lite version of data augmentation was applied.

A hyperparameter optimization library was used to find the best hyperparameter combination. The models learned the training and the validation set well but did perform worse on the test set consisting of log data from a different server logging other types of data.

Automatic Invoice Data Extraction as a Constraint Satisfaction Problem2020Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Invoice processing has traditionally been heavily dependent onmanual labor, where the task is to identify and move certaininformation from an origin to a destination. A time demandingtask with a high interest of automation to reduce time ofexecution, fault-risk and cost. With the evergrowing interest in automation and ArtificialIntelligence (AI), this thesis will explore the possibilities ofautomating the task of extracting and mapping information ofinterest by defining the problem as a Constraint OptimizationProblem (COP) using numeric relations between present information. The problem is then solved by extracting the numericalvalues in a document and utilizing it as an input space whereeach combination of numeric values are tested using a backendsolver.Several different models were defined, using different approachesand constraints on relations between possible existingfields. A solution to an invoice was considered correct if thetotal, tax, net and rounding amounts were estimated correctly. The final best achieved results were 84.30% correct and8.77% incorrect solutions on a set of 1400 various types of invoices. The achieved results show a promising alternative route toproposed solutions using e.g. machine learning or other intelligentsolutions using graphical or positional data. While only regardingthe numerical values present in each document, the proposedsolution becomes decentralized and therefor can be implementedand ran on any set of invoices without any pre-training phase.
