Abstract [en]

Advances in low power wireless communication have resulted in new radio technologies that can achieve long distance communication in energy efficient ways. An emerging problem in this scenario is interference between networks that share the same medium. The fact that these networks have a long transmission range increases the possibility of interference even more. Thus the investigation of how different networks can share the medium independently in a optimal way becomes an essential requirement for the IoT vision. In this poster, we present the first step of this investigation, which is measuring how LoRa and IEEE 802.15.4g PHY layers interfere.

Abstract [en]

Abstract--Future growth in Internet-of-Things applications will lead to an operating environment with many independent networks operating in the same location. Co-existence and inter-network interference in IEEE 802.15.4 networks is particularly interesting because of the popularity of the radio and limited number of "good" channels, making it likely that there will be nearby networks operating on the same channel.This paper presents an in-depth simulation study of inter-network interaction between beacon-enabled IEEE 802.15.4 networks using contention-based slotted CSMA and contention-free GTS allocations. We use simple scenarios intended to highlight the underlying modes of interaction between interfering networks. Our results reveal several complex behaviors, includingepisodes of large, slow oscillations in throughput and long periods of disconnection interspersed with short bursts of high throughput. These results have practical implications for the design and evaluation of protocols and applications for use in future IoT environments.

Abstract [en]

Although the basic mechanics of evolution have been understood since Darwin, debate continues over whether macroevolutionary phenomena are driven by the fitness structure of genotype space or by ecological interaction. In this paper we propose a simple model capturing key features of fitness-landscape and ecological models of evolution. Our model describes evolutionary dynamics in a high-dimensional, structured genotype space with interspecies interaction. We find promising qualitative similarity with the empirical facts about macroevolution, including broadly distributed extinction sizes and realistic exploration of the genotype space. The abstraction of our model permits numerous applications beyond macroevolution, including protein and RNA evolution.
