Abstract [en]

To become a Danish citizen you have to pass a naturalization test consisting of 40 questions, which are primarily based on a textbook called Denmark Then and Now. Through a rhetorical close reading, this article focuses on essentialist tendencies in the national narrative of this text and their consequences for the reader, viz., the applicant for Danish citizenship. Essentializing the Danish citizen, the text fosters static, unchangeable narratives, and the reader is hereby positioned outside these narratives, sharing no part in the essence. The reader becomes an outsider who must adapt herself to an already established and deeply rooted community.
