Title [en]
Partnership Project
Abstract [en]
This project—which is in fact part of a wider, Sida-sponsored partnership programme—exemplifies a new form of cooperation between Sweden and former recipients of Swedish development cooperation support. It is about actor-driven cooperation, as a potential substitute to more traditional forms of development cooperation and transfer of know-how. In partnership with the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) in Durban, South Africa and the Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) in Uppsala, the Department of Peace and Conflict Research (DPCR) set out to reinforce and complement each other, thus being able to actively and innovatively contribute towards the generation of two vital public goods in Africa: durable peace and sustainable development. The full name of the project is ‘ACCORD-DPCR-NAI Partnership Programme: Developing Capacity for Conflict Resolution in favour of Democracy and Social Progress in Africa’. The programme covers research/knowledge production, staff exchange and PhD training. In terms of research, the partners have jointly identified three broad areas and tasks in merit of special attention.

Peace agreements
Objective: Find out under what conditions peace processes and peace agreements succeed or fail in terms of both the durability and the quality of peace.

Challenges to post-war peacebuilding
Objective: Problematise dilemmas that arise with regard to security, democratisation, governance and socio-economic development in post-war situations constrained by external conditionalities and a shortage of domestic resources.

Theory and practice of conflict resolution
Objective: Identify, in an African conflict resolution context, the conceptual basis and theoretical underpinnings for the evolving peace and security practice; and link the theory of conflict resolution to its policy and practice dimensions.

The project consists of several sub-projects, a list of which is subject to revisions in an annual workplan and result matrix. The project output is disseminated in different forms: monographs, articles in peer-reviewed journals, policy briefs, conference proceedings, working papers, etc.
