Conflict and Democracy Program
Abstract [en]
The program brings together research projects, which analyse democracy and democratisation as means of conflict management as well as potential causes of armed conflicts.

The aim of the program is to deepen the understanding of the relationship between democracy and armed conflict worldwide. It involves academic and policy oriented research based on various theoretical and methodological approaches.

Programme activities
- Research collaboration on related issues is taking place within EU: s 7th framework programme: Just and Durable Peace by Piece.

- A unique dataset (IMPACT) on the implementation of peace agreements stipulating power sharing is under development. Data will be available after a suitable embargo period. Read more about this and the Dilemmas of Democratization project in Tvärsnitt 4: 2006.
- Follow-up projects inspired by the book will be presented at the ISA Convention in San Francisco 26-29 March at the panel Electoral Processes in War-Torn Societies. Chair: Benjamin Reilly. - On 7 December 2006 Kristine Höglund participated in a seminar organised by Vetenskapsrådet. She presented the project Dilemmas of Democratization in War-Torn Societies.
- On 6-8 November 2006, Anna Jarstad was chairing the panel “ Political Institutions and Peacebuilding” at Globalization and Peacebuilding, the 2006 annual conference of the Swedish Network of Peace, Conflict and Development Research, at the Radisson SAS, Uppsala, Sweden. Two papers concerning the project “Power Sharing after Civil War” were presented:

- On 20-22 August 2006, Anna Jarstad delivered a paper on power sharing at a workshop organised by PRIO.
- On 3 May 2006, Anna Jarstad was one of the invited speakers when the Tampere Peace Research Institute (TAPRI) celebrated its 35th anniversary with an international symposium on peace research.
- On 12-13 May 2006, Anna Jarstad presented a paper discussing the dilemmas that occur when the simultaneous processes of democratization and peace-building clash, at the conference State, Conflict and Democracy, Lund University.
- The project "Dilemmas of Democratization in Post-War Societies" held two panels during ISA, 22-25 March 2006, in San Diego. Papers by all project participants were presented. A subsequent Symposium in Vail brought together leading experts and organisations from around the world to discuss democracy promotion in war-torn societies.
- On 11 November 2005 the program held a symposium on "Reconciliation in Bosnia and Herzegovina ten years after Dayton". The panel 10.15-12.00 was open to the public. Speakers: Mr. Jakob Finci and Roland Kostic.
- Program participants Anna Jarstad, Kristine Höglund and Isak Svensson attended the American Political Science Association (APSA) annual meeting on the theme “Mobilizing Democracy” in Washington DC, September 1–4, 2005.
- On October 5, 2005, the program held an internal conference on the theme “Conflict and Democracy: Current and Prospective Research”.
- The project Dilemmas of Democratization in Post-War Societies was officially launched on January 1, 2005 and run for the next two years. A first authors’ workshop took place in Sandhamn on 20-23 April, 2005. Presentations were held on the following topics:
