Abstract [en]

There is a growing awareness in many Western countries concerning religious and cultural diversity. In this situation, expectations are often raised that public education should provide pupils with knowledge and competences to prepare them for a society characterized by a variety of worldviews. Also in the non-confessional Swedish school subject of Religious Education, central aims of the subject include the fostering of tolerance and literacy of citizens. Another principal task is to promote critique of religion (National Agency for Education, 2011). This makes the Swedish case especially interesting for exploring if and how these timely but also demanding tasks may be combined, and to what degree public education can contribute to a more sensible and nuanced public discussion on religion. The role of Religious Education teachers in this respect is however understudied, which is notable since the teachers are pivotal. They can be found caught between demanding, multiple, and sometimes diverging aims regarding the subject. This chapter will investigate how RE teachers describe critique of religion in relation to their teaching, and what didactical strategies they use to handle critique of religion.

Abstract [en]

This themed collection is bound together by some foundational observations which have been well documented in earlier research. European post-war welfare systems face challenges related to aging populations, globalization, migration, changing patterns of family and gender roles. The post-war model of welfare dependent on the idea of stable heterosexual families, with male breadwinners and women carers is giving way to more individualized and mobile systems. The four articles and commentary in this issue provide glimpses of the issues within this field that unite contexts as diverse as the Nordic countries, Brazil and the United States. They explore the intersection of welfare, religion and gender charting gendered problems in welfare provision in relation to religious organisation, affiliation and identity. This issue provides examples of how the exhaustion of women and welfare systems is interconnected and the understanding of this crucial to any attempts to reform welfare systems to enhance social inclusion or reduce exclusion.

Abstract [en]

This article comparatively studies intersections between biopolitics and religion in Finnish and Norwegian parliamentary debates on assisted reproductive technologies and biotechnology. In both countries, references to religion have been prevalent in policy processes and parliamentary debates on these issues, with Christian Democrats actively promoting bioethics. The article analyses references to religion and the role of national churches and Christian Democratic parties. It also discusses under what conditions religious positions influence political decisions and how these cases bring nuance to theories of politicisation of religion. Legal sources and parliamentary proceedings of plenary sessions are analysed through critical discourse analysis. The article suggests that reproductive politics has contributed to politicisation of religion in the Finnish and Norwegian parliaments, identifying blurred boundaries between public and private spheres and a discursive framework of values debates.

Abstract [en]

This article compares student’s attitudes towards human rights in countries with different religious traditions, namely Lutheran dominated Scandinavian countries and Eastern Orthodox countries in the eastern part of Europe. The four countries involved in this study are Belarus, Romania, Norway and Sweden. Our focus is student’s attitudes towards questions related to the right to life, in this case abortion. The effect that religion and religiosity have on attitudes towards abortion is a central part of the analyses. In addition, we will look at the relationship between trust in institutions and support for certain human rights. Previous studies found that trust in institutions was positively correlated with values that stress stability, protection, and preservation of traditional practices, and negatively correlated with values that emphasize independent thought and change.  On this basis we expect  that trust in governmental institutions have different effects on attitudes in countries with democratic and authoritarian regimes.
