Nutrition and ageing - epidemiological and experimental studies
Abstract [sv]
Nutrition, i.e. the interaction between food intake, metabolism and body composition, is a main denominator for mans health, functionality and longevity. This research project evaluate 1) dietary patterns, e.g. Mediterranean-like diet or carbohydrate-restricted diet, in elderly Swedish men according to long-term survival and to incidence of dementia, 2) the role and potential effect mechanisms of n-3 fatty acid supplementation to elderly patients with mild-moderate Alzheimer?s disease, 3) the prevalence and consequences of sarcopenia, i.e. low muscle mass and reduced muscle function, in geriatric patients, and subsequently the effect of combined nutritional and resistance training programs on morbidity and function in geriatric patients. Moreover, the project analyze in vitro anti-inflammatory actions of ACE-inhibitors for potential anti-sarcopenic treatment models (4), as this class of drugs appear to sustain muscle function in elderly, and lastly compare determinants for cognitive and physical functions in elderly in Sweden and Italy (5), due to the underlying fact that eating patterns differ between the two countries. For the elderly, cognitive function and muscle strength are necessary components of an independent life-style. The importance of the project lies in its capability to create knowledge on nutritional and related factors of significance for health and well-being at old age.
