Title [en]
Sarcopenia – novel understanding of occurrence, mechanisms and treatment of an emerging threat to independent living at old age
Abstract [sv]
Sarcopenia, the gradual loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, is a key precursor to late-life disability. This integrative project spans from observational over experimental to intervention studies, with the objective to define occurrence, consequences, mechanisms and possible treatment of sarcopenia. A. Observational studies: 100 consecutive geriatric patients >65 years old will undergo body composition measurements, functional tests and blood samples which will be related to hospital stays and mortality. Next, the ULSAM study of 2322 50 year old Swedish males gathered in 1970, will be used to define development of sarcopenia over time. Muscle biopsy data (e.g. muscle fibre area) in 475 males at 70 y, se-fatty acid profiles, se-25(OH)vitamin D levels and dietary intake at 70 y will be related to DXA scans of muscle mass performed at 82 and 88 years. B. Experimental studies: Muscle biopsies from 100 ULSAM participants at age 70, who performed DXA scans at 82 and 88, will undergo u-array analysis to ident
