Title [sv]
Fylogeni och diversifiering av kambriska linguliforma brachiopoder och deras användning inom biostratigrafi och paleobiogeografi
Title [en]
Phylogeny and diversification of Cambrian linguliform brachiopods and their use in biostratigraphy and paleobiogeography
Abstract [sv]
The proposed project will investigate the diversity, distribution and phylogeny of organophosphatic brachiopods (subphylum Linguliformea) during the Cambrian. It will focus on: 1) the study and comparison of shell structural data of linguliform brachiopods, phosphatic stem-group brachiopods, and selected tommotiids, to resolve brachiopod phylogeny and to detect patterns of diversification, origination, and extinction of major taxa within the linguliform brachiopods; and 2) the establishment of a biozonation based on linguliform brachiopods using newly obtained data on the detailed stratigraphic distribution of linguliform brachiopods at numerous sections and localities worldwide. The basis of the project is a huge collection of unpublished material from currently about 45 localities of which samples from the Great Basin, USA, are especially rich and well documented. The new data on diversity and distribution will be used not only for biostratigraphical purposes but also to resolve patterns of biogeographic distribution and to evaluate changes in faunal composition in relation to environmental changes. The ecological preferences of many taxa will thereby be assessed, adding important new information to the so far poorly understood ecology of linguliform brachiopods.
