Youth: Danger to Peace or Blessing in Disguise?: A Qualitative Comparison of the Effect of Youth Inclusion on Non-Ethnic Civil War in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana

Abstract [en]

Youth bulges have received increasingly more attention from both researchers and

policymakers, as they are often seen as a threat to stability in economically developing

countries. Nonetheless, a general consensus on the effect of youth bulges on conflict has so far

not been reached. Thus, this thesis contributes to the puzzle by exploring under what conditions

does a youth bulge in economically developing countries lead to non-ethnic civil war? This

research hypothesizes that inclusion of youth in CSOs and political entities may be a mitigating

variable in this relationship. This is researched in a qualitative manner through a structured,

focused comparison of Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. The empirical findings support the proposed

hypothesis, as Ghana had high levels of youth inclusion and did not experience non-ethnic civil

war, whereas Côte d’Ivoire had low levels of youth inclusion and did experience non-ethnic

civil war from 2010-2011. Nonetheless, due to limitations in terms of generalizability and

representativeness the findings should be treated with caution and call for more in-depth

qualitative research on youth empowerment.
