Akademibondens plikt, universitetets rätt: Feodala produktionsförhållanden vid Uppsala universitets gods 1650-1790

2001 (Swedish)Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
Abstract [en]

This doctoral dissertation studies the relationship between customary tenants (landbor) and landlords in Sweden during the 17th and 18th centuries. This was a basic relationship within Swedish society and thus fundamental to economic, social, juridical and political life. A detailed study of this relationship can thus provide knowledge concerning the function of and changes within society. The study concentrates on the frequent contacts between the owners and users of the land, a topic previous research has largely ignored. The form and content of these contacts is accordingly something quite unknown. Consequently, the point of departure of this study is three elementary questions:

What was the relationship between tenants and landlords?

How did the relation between tenants and landlords change?

Why did this change take place?

To be able to study the actors that were the backbone of this relation, and to answer the questions, I have chosen to study the estate of Uppsala University, and the relationship between the university peasants and Uppsala University as landlords during the period 1650-1790. The reason for choosing this particular estate is the nature and extent of the source material, which makes it possible to conduct a very detailed study over a long span of time.
