Abstract [en]
Background: Since 2012 parents in Sweden are offered to vaccinate their daughters’ aged 10-12 years against HPV in the general child vaccination program by school nurses.
Aim: To investigate school nurses’ experiences of, knowledge about and attitudes to HPV vaccination after the implementation in the general child vaccination program.
Method: A cross-sectional study. A web survey was conducted. One hundred school nurses completed the questionnaire: the study was a part of a larger national study.
Result: The majority of the school nurses considered themselves to have adequate knowledge to inform girls (63 %) and legal guardians (60 %) about HPV vaccination. 63 % of the school nurses were positive to the implementation of the HPV vaccination in the general child vaccination program and to the assignment. The school nurses who considered that they had enough knowledge to inform the girls and legal guardians about HPV vaccination were more positive to the assignment to vaccinate against HPV than those who did not have enough knowledge (p<0.05).
Conclusion: This study shows that there is a relationship between school nurses’ knowledge about HPV and their attitude to the vaccination. Therefore it is important that school nurses get regular and good education about HPV to be able to fulfill their important assignment to implement the HPV vaccination.
