Abstract [en]

Abstract

Background: In Sweden, a well-established self-management program for patients with OA has reported to be effective. Joint Academy has developed a digital version of the conventional program to increase availability.

Objective: To explore if a group of patients with either hip or knee OA, who participated in a six-week digital self-management program Joint Academy, would change their physical function, Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL), and pain levels. Another objective was to compare the treatment effects between hip and knee OA.

Methods: Patients with hip or knee OA in Sweden were recruited (n=505) via their usage of Joint Academy’s application. Data were collected at baseline and the six-week follow-up via the application. Physical function was measured with 30 seconds chair stand test, HRQoL was evaluated with EQ-5D 5L, and pain intensity was rated with a numerical rating scale.

Results: Data from 448 patients (knee OA=260, hip OA=188) were included in the analysis. The results showed significant improvement in physical function, HRQoL, and pain intensity. There was no significant difference between the groups.

Conclusion: The effects are comparable with the conventional self-management program currently used in Sweden, which strengthens the evidence that a digital self-management program is a suitable alternative.
