Abstract [en]

This thesis takes its stance from social constructionism, according to which our reality is seen as socially constructed and where history, culture and knowledge are interrelated. Knowledge, is seen as a product of social processes and social action that we categorize our world after. This categorization then, is a product of how we use language, how we understand and talk about subjects. This categorization is usually referred to as discourses and through them, we create and reproduce our understanding of social relations, social identities and power structures.

Using theories on gender and nation by scholars such as Nira Yuval-Davis and Jenny White and elaborating on earlier studies on nationalist and women discourse in Turkey, this thesis seeks to examine how the gendered nature of the nation are present and used in nationalist discourse to shape society and how nationalist discourse poses limits and opportunities for women roles within a nation. By analysing the political manifestos of AKP with critical discourse analysis, the aim is to investigate AKP’s discourse on women and if they in their policies and description on women issues in society, emphasizes women roles within the private sphere.
