Detection of Giardia and Cryptosporidium inSwedish Horses using Immunological andMolecular Biology Methods

Abstract [en]

Infection by Giardia and Cryptosporidium is a worldwide health problem for both humans and several animal species. The parasites are gastric parasites that can cause infections giving symptom of severe diarrhea and abdominal pain. Some species and genotypes are zoonotic, meaning they use both animals and humans as hosts. Although Giardia and Cryptosporidium are not closely related, they cause similar symptoms. In later years there has been an increased interest in Giardia and Cryptosporidium, and since humans have a history of living close to horses there has also emerged an interest to elucidate if horses can be infected by the parasites. There are few existing studies on the prevalence and zoonotic infections on horses. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts in fecal samples from Swedish horses. Fecal samples were collected from 143 symptom-free horses in Sweden. To detect parasites in the fecal samples, immunofluorescence with monoclonal antibodies were used. All the positive samples were tested with a nested PCR to further confirm presence. The results from the immunofluorescence show a prevalence of 3,5 % Giardia and 12,5% Cryptosporidium which establishes that horses can be infected by both parasites. This is the first report describing the prevalence in Swedish horses and the zoonotic risks of Giardia and Cryptosporidium. The conclusion is that horses can be infected with Giardia and Cryptosporidium. More studies are needed to evaluate the prevalence of Giardias and Cryptosporidiums in Swedish horses. Keywords: Foal,
