Abstract [sv]

Pulverized coal injection (PCI), is an efficient and economical way to use fuel in a blast furnace operation. Compared to coke, PCI coals cost a lot less and creates more fuel maneuverability for the operators. To inject pulverized coal in the raceway of a blast furnace is also a very efficient way of using all the energy in the material, which increases the gas utilization in the process. The purpose of this master thesis is to find and evaluate different kind of PCI-coals for the two blast furnaces at SSAB in Oxelösund. Several coal properties as chemical analysis, HGI, FSI, moisture, ash content, volatile matter and geographical locations were used as a tool to limit the different coal alternatives. The (ten) remaining candidates were thereafter evaluated in an Excel-based blast furnace model (MASMOD) that simulates a theoretical case for each coal alternative in terms of HGI, FSI, moisture [%], ash content [%], geographical location, coke rate [kg/thm], pellet rate [kg/thm], crude iron analysis [%], slag analysis [%], calorific value – BF gas [MJ/Nm3], ETA CO [%], blast flow [Nm3/thm]. The parameters were compared separately and it showed that all coal alternatives increased the sulfur content, which increases the cost of desulfurization. The variations in phosphorous is too small to have any significant impact on a possible coal change. All of the coal alternatives fulfills the criteria regarding HGI, FSI, moisture and ash content. The PCI alternatives “MV M” and “MV N” are prime candidates for further evaluation and practical trial due to the great decrease in coke rate.
