Experiences of stroke rehabilitation with the Vasa-concept : -A qualitative interview study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background Stroke is a serious disease that affects many people and costs society very large amounts. There are no rehabilitation measures with evidence that provides good post-acute recovery. The Vaasa concept has provided good recovery according to proven experience but lacks scientific evidence.

Objectives Examine stroke patients experience of the Vasa concept to create evidence and facilitate future studies.

Design and method A qualitative descriptive content analysis of three recorded semi-structured interviews with three patients and two interpreting relatives.

Results The analysis resulted in an overall theme, 5 categories and 19 subcategories. The informants perceived rehabilitation as safe, secure and motivating. It was found to provide good sensory, motor and cognitive recovery. Many have been observed to be helped by the concept which is highly recommended by the informants. Much time spent with the assistant may be required as well as weekly adjustments with the therapist.

Conclusion The Vasa concept seems to have features of several rehabilitation methods that the National Board of Health recommends and seems to include several rehabilitation principles that have evidence of neuroplastic recovery. The Vasa concept's founders 'attitude, actions, reputation and other environmental factors may have contributed significantly to the informants' very positive experiences of neuromuscular and cognitive recovery. The Vasa concept may include techniques that can help the patient make better use of existing resources.
