Abstract [en]

The episode För Þórs til Útgarða-Loka in Snorri Sturluson’s Gylfaginning section of his Edda recounts how Þórr and Loki stay overnight at a farm. Þórr slaughters his goats for dinner but when he resurrects them the next morning, one goat is lame. Þórr takes the farmer’s children, Þjálfi and Röskva, as compensation and they follow him on his trip to Útgarða-Loki. Röskva, however, disappears rather quickly, at somewhat different points according to the four major manuscript sources. The question is why she does and what the purpose was to involve her at all. The answer is that Snorri utilized an older tale where she did appear, as did the eddic poem Hymiskviða. Since it was presumable well known that Röskva belonged in the “original” story, Snorri felt obliged to include her, but let her soon go as she played no role in his narrative.
