Focus, Concentration and Achievements? : A qualitative study of two cooperated reading promotion projects between Libraries and Sports Clubs. (Engelska)
Abstract [sv]
This master´s thesis in Library and Information Science examines reading promotion projects that has been executed in cooperation between libraries and sports clubs. The purpose of this thesis is to examine why these projects are invested in, by both libraries and the sports clubs, and how the persons involved in them are thinking about reading and its purpose. Based on both the concept of cooperation and that of united collaborative actions, two projects are examined where the libraries has cooperated with SISU sport clubs, and that has been completed on two different places in Sweden. The method to collecting data was qualitative interviews with four librarians and three sports consultants from SISU. There are several focus points in this study, one of them is the perception of children and their reading, also known as their literacy. Another important aspect in the study is that regarding how the cooperation between these two different professional cultures has been completed and if differences has affected the projects. The theoretical framework consists of the sociocultural theory developed by Roger Säljö as an overall perspective, and the concepts of teamwork, work dimensions and the professional object from the works of Lena Folkesson and Amira Sofie Sandin. The concept of childhood studies also plays an important part in the interpretation of the material, as well as the idea of sports and reading as opposites, against the background of research about history of reading. Main results of the study shows that the librarians and sports consultants involved in the projects shared positive experiences, except for some initial skepticism from the sports clubs. Other interesting results are the approach to reading as a means to achieve focus for upcoming sport achievements. The projects have been executed with the hopes of reaching out with books to children in a different environment than the school, and thereby attract them to read more. This is a two years master's thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.
