The increased use of information and communication technology in recent years has brought change not only to our everyday lives but also to how we relate to learning. Distance educational programs have tried with the help of the technological development to enable web tools that shortens the distance between peers and creates interaction in distance education. Despite that, there are studies that show that social media is used and relevant as a tool for educational purposes, even in distance education. The purpose of this study is to examine the distance students' experiences and use of social media as a tool for learning in distance education. Central themes of the study will touch on the use of social media as a tool in distance education as well as social media as a tool for learning. Previous research highlights how social media is used for educational purposes and how the development of its use affects our learning. The study is based on the socio-cultural theory of learning, which is complemented with the theory of connectivism. Together, these theories contribute a broader understanding of the study's problem area related to social media as a tool, its use and role for learning. The study was conducted using qualitative interviews with five individuals with any experience of distance education. The results show that social media is perceived by distance students as a tool that supports learning, by enabling aspects in which it was previously perceived as challenging in distance education.
