The meaning of history in cultural reproduction is one area of the social sciences where archaeology as a method among methods, can contribute to a better understanding of cultural and social processes in the present as it relates to the historically formed structures that shapes and is shaped by praxis. Through a discussion of a distant present, 6000 BC in northernmost Scandinavia, it is argued in this paper that this society in a moment of paradigmatic change actively returned to the past to find ways to go on. Focus is on material culture as carriers of a collective memory, in this case tanged points. Through a geneaology of the tanged point it is shown that the active return to a mythical past was based on a sequence of real historical events, however reinterpreted to suit the present. Reconstructions of technical processes and an activated interest in old aesthetics seem to important vehicles for rewriting history based on relics.
