Functional analysis of middle and upper palaeolithic quartz tools from China

Abstract [en]

In this article the authors tryes to evaluate the possabilities for a functional analysis of palaeolithic flaked quartz tools by an analysis of samples from three cave sites in northern China. The sites range in time from c 200 000 yrs BP to c 20 000 yrs BP. It is concluded that the tools are affected by mechanical and to some degree also chemical weathering. They may, however, be functionally interpreted if the analysis is geared towards defining regularities in the formation of linear features in the lower parts of the microtopography. These parts of the tools surface seem to be less affected by mechanical post-depositional processes. Since different worked materials have different hardness and thus produces wear patterns with different coverage and relation to high points in the micro topography, it is assumed that different types of worked materials stands different chanses of detection on an original sample. A research program is proposed where tools from sites with variable sedimentary conditions are evaluated and compared to expreimental tool surfeces produced by contact with variable materials and subsequently altered by simulated weathering processes. Even very old quartz tools exposed to environmental processes for a long time may thus at different levels of detail be given a functional meaning.
