Abstract [en]

The manufacture of machined steel parts is today widely dependent on hard metal cutting tools. Cobalt is totally dominant as the binder in hard metals, but recent findings have pointed towards health risks associated with cobalt powder. This has led to a search for an alternative binder. This work has investigated one such alternative binder, based on nickel and iron. Gradient sintered and CVD coated turning grades with a binder composition of 85wt%Ni15wt%Fe were manufactured. The resistance to plastic deformation was evaluated in a turning test and compared to a reference with cobalt binder. The results are promising for further development of alternative binder turning grades.
