The article discusses an eighteenth-century workbook on the Russian language, held in the manuscript repository of the municipal library of Västerås, Sweden. The author of the workbook was a Swedish student of Russian by the name of Fredrik von Stenhagen, and his teacher was Michael Groening. The latter worked for two decades at the Academy of Sciences and the Academic gymnasium in St. Petersburg as a translator and teacher of German and French. The workbook is brought to scholarly attention here for the first time. The material offers a valuable insight into the methods employed in the teaching of Russian to foreign students in the eighteenth century.
