Abstract [en]

This paper aims to investigate the process behind the purchase of public sculpture from a client perspective. The purchase process is narrowed down to three main categories, the planning and decision making process, how the client management pursue the work of potential purpose and function of public art and how the placement process is carried out. The investigation is done by a case study of two public sculptures purchased from the same artist, Knutte Wester, but bought different years and by different counties in Sweden. Child Carrying Wings in Uppsala and Monument without a Home in Umeå. The process behind their purchase is explored through interviews with their responsible purchasers. Further the essay explores how the purchaser work with aspects of purpose and function of the sculptures in relation to a combination of theories regarding different functions and purposes of public art. This study shows that the purchase processes can differ greatly depending on the nature of the case, still Child Carrying Wings and Monument without Home have many similarities in their ordering processes.
