Observing from a phenomenological standpoint: Comments on the use of ethnographic observations in a phenomenological study
Uppsala University, Disciplinary Domain of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Sociology.
2017 (English)Conference paper, (Refereed)
Abstract [en]

In this paper, I present some initial reflections on the use of observations in phenomenological research. The issue originated in how I, in conducting research for my dissertation, came across the opportunity to conduct participant observations and in how I then had to figure out how to make sense of and incorporate the field notes from the observation into the phenomenologically informed approach used in the research project. In discussing the opportunities and drawbacks of using observations in phenomenological research I furthermore present a brief account of Husserlian and Schutzian phenomenology, a brief review of the literature on phenomenological ethnography, and a preliminary analysis of an excerpt from the field notes.
