Abstract [en]

Recent studies of emotions have attempted to show that they are essential components of the moral character. This paper critically examines three models: the first holds that emotions are acts of the will; the second that emotions can be part of the moral character if intellectually accepted by the individual, and the third holds that even if humans are not in control of their emotions, emotions are morally significant because passivity itself is an essential component of the moral character. In this paper I argue that the moral character is essentially active but that such actiivty should not be solely understood in terms of reasoning and will, but also in terms of emotions.
