Abstract [en]

The Russian annexation of the Crimean peninsula in 2014 signified a watershed moment in the perception of Russia’s role in international politics. In its wake, many have stressed the importance of reassessing the established truths regarding the dynamics of security and power in the region. The purpose of this essay is to explore the political discourse of the Swedish parliament from 2014 until 2017, in an attempt to determine, firstly, whether there has been a “securitization” of Russia in connection with the crimean crisis, secondly, the nature of such a securitization, and, thirdly, its effects on Swedish security policy. Using the theoretical framework of securitization theory and the methodology of frame analysis, this essay analyses the political discourse of the eight parties that hold seats in the Swedish parliament, focusing specifically on the annual foreign policy debates of 2015, 2016 and 2017. The study identifies the securitizing moves that are present in the discourse of the political parties, and reveals how narratives are constructed around the idea of Russia as an existential threat, and the measures that are presented as necessary to avoid such a threat.
