Abstract [en]

ABSTRACT

Background: Smoking is a global health issue since the number of smokers in the word is very large. Injuries and diseases related to smoking are increasing which is not only a problem on an individual level but also has a significant negative economical effect for the society. Smoking at an early age increases the probability of suffering from diseases or injuries related to the use of tobacco. To lower the risk of adolescents starting to smoke or to help them from the addiction it's essential for the school nurse to take every measure possible.

Objective: The purpose is to reveal different methods to help the nurse discover, minimise and prevent smoking in adolescents. To investigate which factors causes adolescents to start smoking or quit smoking is also a reason for this study.

Method: Litterature study based on twelve scientific articles containing a qualitative and quantitative approach. The litterature was found by database searches in Cinahl, PubMed and Discovery. The review of the articles was done using Willman, Bahtesvani & Stoltz template for quality reviewing and using a template from SBU. Orem's selfcare theory was used as referense.

Result: Several studies shows the strongest connection between influence from friends and smoking in adolescents. Using different methods both working with groups and on individual level the school nurse could help changing the behaviour. Several nurses dedicated to smoke prevention felt they lacked the knowledge and material to make them feel confident with the task.

Conclusion: To help school nurses to feel safe in their job working with prevention of adolescents smoking they need to be provided with the right education and material. Several other methods to prevent was tried but not all had the expected/desired effect. The single greatest case for adolescents smoking is the influence from friends.
