Abstract [en]

The essay aims to study Old Uppsala as cultural heritage, especially Viking- and vendel age, how history is presented and pictured.Material objects are concrete traces from history, remains. The picture analysis is an important part of this analysis, as well as myths and tales, but also how the location has been interpreted through time, especially the last two centuries.By a selection of souvenirs and pictures, I wish to study what objects are chosen to be souvenirs or copies, how the location and the viking is presented, but also how the period is presented to visitors. What activities are created round Old Uppsala and what groups are attracted to the location? As conclusion children are a target group for the museum but all ages are interested in the location and the history. Archeology is the main attraction to visitors, and during recent years new excavations have been made and new knowledge is being presented about this ancient location. A popular vision of the viking with horns on the helmet inspired by the images from 19th century lives on in souvenirs, film and popular culture. At the same time images and replicas true to the findings are spread widely and made popular by museum and scientists, but also by the associations dedicated to vendel- and viking age. These associations contribute to the activities at the location in many ways. There also seems to be an exchange between history, cultural heritage, myths, litterature, film and popular culture. In order to see how history is portrayed and what attracts the public in our time, I have studied the location by observation, interviews, pictures, objects, souvenirs, myths and marketing material.
