Abstract [en]

Tino Villanueva is considered one of the most renowned Chicano poets whose work has been anthologized and honored internationally by critics. He has published seven books of poetry in English and Spanish since the early 1970s. Villanueva was born in San Marcos (Texas) in 1941 to a family of farmworkers.  Some of his most praised poetry has a focus on his family life and his upbringing in segregated Texas. His book length poem Scene from the Movie GIANT(1993) won a 1994 American Book Award. The long poem displays the thoughts and feelings of a Mexican-American teenager in the 1950s when watching the now-classic movie Giant (1956), dir. by George Stevens, starring Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean and Rock Hudson.
