Abstract [en]

This article examines and compares the Personal Names Acts of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. The aim is to study norms and discrimination based on gender, sexuality and nationality. Personal names, as well as the laws governing naming, are viewed as social practices which constitute and maintain perceptions about individuals and society. The study identifies norms concerning gender and sexuality which exclude transgender people and same-sex parents. The acts also reproduce ideas about the names and culture of a nation, as well as about foreign names and cultures. How the legislation deals with foreign names is discussed from an integration perspective.
