Abstract [en]

In a panel data analysis of 131 territories, over a time period from 1995-2010, we investigate the effect of tax haven activity on the economies of non-tax havens.  The effect is measured empirically through economic proximity to tax havens (using export as a proxy) and its effect on GDP per capita in non-tax havens. The results of economic proximity are significant and indicate that economic proximity to tax havens has a positive effect on the economies of non-tax havens. Using a fixed effects regression model and a first difference model, we are able to control for territory fixed effects that might otherwise affect the performance of an economy and bias our results.
