Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Perinatal death is a global problem affecting both the involved parents and the health care personnel caring for the family. The focus of this literature review is the health care personnel.

Aim: To describe the experiences of the health care personnels, and how they believe they would experience perinatal death. Further the aim was to examine how they would handle and how they believe they would handle the care of the parents who are affected by perinatal death and how they prepare for this care.

Method: A review of the literature including 17 studies, with both qualitative and quantitative approach.

Results: The results emerged into experiences of sadness, by all of the health care personnel (nurses, midwives, physicians) included in this literature review. Fear and guilt were further described, mostly by the physicians. Personal and professional experience had an impact on how comfortable the health care personnel felt. Perinatal death had an impact on all the health care personnel when caring for a family affected by this event. The physicians were more afraid of legal actions compared to the nurses and midwives. Furthermore, psychiatric symptoms were common. To cope with the event of perinatal death several of the health care personnel expressed a need to discuss the event with colleagues, family and friends. Midwives with education or experience in caring for families affected by perinatal death felt more secure and comfortable with this care. More education was generally desirable when caring for families affected by perinatal death.

Conclusion: When health care personnel are emotionally affected by an event involving perinatal death, support both by colleagues, family and friends has been shown to be an important component for coping. Furthermore, a need for education was identified.
