The Dual Nature of Freedom of Thought: Secular or Religious Values to Govern schools?

Abstract [en]

There are few subjects that can stir up passions and rile even the most mild-tempered individuals as much as the unsolicited advice on how to raise one’s children or to practice one’s faith. This paper will risk doing both because it intends to question the role of nonsecular educational institutions, and to argue for the importance of a fully secular educational system. This will be done by contemplating the meaning of freedom of thought and suggesting that this core liberal principal has both a positive and negative dimension. The two dimensions will be derived from the discussion Isaiah Berlin had on positive and negative freedom, and will subsequently be tied to Joseph Raz’s value of personal autonomy. The paper will conclude that schools that for whatever reason try to further the ends of a specific religion have the potential to violate both the negative and positive dimensions of freedom of thought. Thus, will this paper call into question the need for a liberal state to tolerate any educational institution with a religious agenda.
