Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine the Republican Party’s view on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) as well as the Party’s rhetoric towards women and the female body. This study is based on the following questions: 1) What is the Republican Party's ideology in regard to sexual and reproductive health and rights; and 2) how is the rhetoric of the Party’s representatives towards women and the female body? The theory on which this study is based is a radical-feminist theory that seeks to investigate power structures between the sexes. The method consists of a qualitative critical content analysis because the material being analysed consists of official political statements by the White House and statements made by representatives of the Party in the media. This study finds that, in regard to SRHR, the Republican ideology is based on a traditional family constellation and religion, which keep the woman in a subordinated position. Republicans use theseviews as an explanation for their legislation on matters related to SRHR. The Trump ad-ministration identifies itself as pro-life and "family first", which implies restrictions on abortion and a fortification of the woman as mother and caregiver for family and home. Women’s self-determination is limited, and they do not have full access to healthcare and reproductive rights.
