Abstract [sv]

Right-wing populist parties on Environment and Climate

This article inquiries into how populist radical right parties relates to environmental and climate related issues, by analysing the Swedish and German context. This is accomplished by examining the Sverigedemokraterna (SD) and Alternative for Germany (AfD) party material along six dimensions of populism, as defined by Taggart. The argument advanced in this article attempts to identify how these parties relate to environmental and climate change issues as a threat, or if they consider other challenges more threatening. I do so by proceeding in four steps. First, I briefly identify and outline the baseline arguments on how to define populism, environmental movements and the environment and climate. Second, I specify the two political parties and their historic background so that I then can discuss to what extent the parties’ political stances relate to environmental- and climate related issues. Finally, I discuss how this demonstrates a fundamental difference in understanding of these matters and how to best engage in them, from those of environmental parties and -movements, based on two theories: economic insecurity perspective or cultural backlash thesis as outlined by Inglehart and Norris.
