Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to answer the question “How do tariffs affect FDI in the United States? ” by examining data on the net inflows of FDI and the average applied tariff rates in the United States. The data was disaggregated on the sector, industry and country specific levels, for which three separate regression models were made, examining the effects of the tariffs together with selected control variables. The results suggest that a change in the average applied tariff rate for a given year does not have an effect on the net inflows of FDI in the United States. Instead, this study provides econometric results implying that the characteristics of the foreign investor’s country are more important in determining FDI than the characteristics of the target country. However, there are reasons to question the internal validity of the results, which is more thoroughly discussed in the paper.
