Abstract [en]

In this thesis, I investigate whether the expansion of the internet had an impact on political participation in Norway. Using municipal panel data on broadband subscriptions and coverage, and municipal council turnout, I estimate the effect of internet use on voter turnout with an instrumental variables approach. Internet use is instrumented with broadband coverage, which virtually went from zero to 100% between 2000 and 2010. The overall results indicate a small positive effect of internet use on voter turnout. Estimates are robust across several specifications and controlling for education, employment, population and building permits, and to the inclusion of municipal fixed effects. This evidence is in line with previous research, and should be helpful for future studies of the relationship between internet and political participation. Heterogeneity is apparent, and the positive estimates are significant in all specifications for the subsamples of observations with low education and with high past turnout.
