Abstract [en]

Two regulations, Reference Price System and Generic Substitution, on the Swedish pharmaceutical market were implemented in order to foster competition between brand-name firms and generic drug firms. Sweden’s European neighbor Austria has neither of these regulations. By conducting a case study separately for three antibiotic drugs, this paper set out to examine the effects of the Swedish regulations on antibiotics drugs market by comparing Swedish and Austrian market outcomes post-patent expiration, over the period 2006 to 2017. Using theoretical models on market competition and what we predict from the abovementioned regulations, the paper found that the regulations had the desired effect in one out of three antibiotics. For the remaining two drugs, we could not conclude that the regulations made the Swedish market more competitive than the Austrian.
