Abstract [en]

This chapter provides a synthesis of Augustine’s language-philosophical and ethnolinguistic thought and explores the interconnections between these topics. In particular, this chapter documents Augustine’s concept of the word as a linguistic sign, his Latin terminology for the triadic relationship of the linguistic sign, his views on the nature of the spoken word as vocalized thought, his views on mental words as the non-linguistic basis of language and his etymological, historical, and ecclesiological views on language origin and diversity.
