Abstract [en]

Aphasia is a language disorder caused by acquired brain injury that leads to impairments in understanding and producing language. The language difficulties may cause challenges within different areas of life, for example leisure activities and relationships. Aphasia often affects relatives of the person with people with aphasia as well. The aims of this study were to 1) investigate how speech and language pathologists work with people with aphasia and their relatives in Finland and 2) compare the results with a Swedish parallel study. The study was conducted as a web-based survey where 63 Finnish speech and language pathologists who worked with people with aphasia and their relatives participated. The results showed differences in caretaking of people with aphasia and their relatives depending on the sector (public/private) where the participants worked and between the two countries. However, only few differences could be seen depending on participants’ experience or in which region of the country they worked. The results indicate some difficulties in implementing evidence in the clinical practice. Lack of resources was often mentioned as the reason for why the participant could not practice their work as wanted. The result of the study corresponds with earlier national and international studies, which leads to the conclusions that no major changes have happened to the management of people with aphasia or relatives.
