Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
The aim of the paper is to determine the effect of social norm, or endogenous social interaction effects on individual sickness absence. The focus is on municipality-based reference groups. A five year long register based panel data set is used to study individuals aged between 25 and 64. The period under study is 1997-2001, and a major reform in the sickness insurance system in the beginning of the period is used to facilitete the ndentification of the parameters of interest. The results indicate positive and significant effects of social interactions on individual's sickness absence in municipaltites with small and medium sized populations.
