Title: The directed conversation. Participant roles, perspective and democracy in the Swedish television programme Debatt.
Number of pages: 38
Author: Ulrika Palmkvist
Tutor: Göran Svensson
Course: Media and Communication Studies D
Period: Autumn 2005
University: Uppsala University
Purpose/Aim: The aim of this essay is to see if the debate programme model created by Christian Svensson can be applied also to the programme “Debatt”. The work will mainly focus on the part of the model, which includes the participant roles. There will also be an approach to whether “Debatt” can be described as a democratic instrument or not.
Material/Method: The study has been concentrated on five programmes. The methods being used in this essay are both qualitative and quantitative.
Main results: This essay shows that ”Debatt” shows many similarities to the model written by Svensson from the experiences from his own study. The study also concludes that a local perspective gives the programme a higher “democratic potential” even though arguments can be brought up to why “Debatt” is not to be seen as democratic instrument.
