Abstract [en]

Title: “You believe it and at the same time you don’t” – A qualitative study of risk perception

Author: Veera Partanen

Aim: To find out how an article of nuclear crisis during summer 2006 has been interpreted by non-technical individuals by the age of 20 to 26.

Method/Material: Qualitative literature studies, interviews

Main Results: Study shows that the communicational inputs that are presented during a time of crisis do have an effect on the person that takes part of an article that is published in a newspaper that the reader has confidence to. Therespondents have confidence towards the Swedish authorities and other experts as well. The study shows also that the reading process is notalways consequent. During this process the respondents say that they rely on the information that is presented a newspaper although they thetotality is considered to be not believable.
