Abstract [en]

Emotions seem to have been discussed ever since humans began to speak, but the terms we use to express our emotions varies a lot. The purpose of this thesis is to establish basic emotion terms in the Swedish and English languages and thereafter conduct a cross-linguistic comparison of the two. Through elicitation conducted with native speaking informants from both languages, two lists of basic emotion terms were established due to frequency and average rank. The study is based on the works with Basic Color Terms conducted by Brent Berlin and Paul Kay (1999), using their criteria to establish the basic terms for emotions as well. The similarities between English and Swedish is much more tangible than you could have imagined.
