Abstract [en]

The sociologist Hartmut Rosa has developed a theory of modernity, based on the concept of social acceleration, which proffers a new prism through which to view modernity. It is based on the assumption of continuous acceleration of three societal domains: technology, social change and individual pace of life. This paper attempts to critically assess Professor Rosa’s theory and discuss its merits and misgivings. The research is based on three queries: (1) Is Rosa’s theory useful in sociological research? (2) How has Rosa’s theory been received? (3) Is there any substantial evidence for the idea of social acceleration? The analysis finds Rosa’s theory wanting in terms of inner logic, but nonetheless deems it felicitous as a sociological theory because of its heuristic value. It also summarizes the reception of Rosa’s theory of Social acceleration in the sociological community, and discusses difficulties in measuring the concept “social acceleration”.
