The site-specific art at Nya Karolinska Solna : Process analysis, creation process and reception history (English)
Abstract [en]

This research gives an account of the art project with the record-breaking budget of 118 million Swedish Crowns at the recently built Hospital Nya Karolinska Solna in Stockholm. The aim of this paper is multilateral. The study is divided into three main research questions: First, to examine the terms of reference and intentions of the commissioning board that was part of the process of installing site-specific art at Nya Karolinska Solna. This is done by critical review of the regulatory documents of the commissioner, Kulturförvaltningen Stockholms läns landsting. Second, to show how the artists have chosen to approach the specific context, through in-depth interviews with three artists with different artistic expressions. Third, to illustrate how these specific kinds of art work in public spaces have been assessed by professional art critics. The art project’s overall aim was a democratic representation, which required numerous selection criteria that made the process difficult to oversee. The artists were considerably indifferent as to how the selection process was organized. However, the artists opinions included that they thought that the process was too regulated, but also that it was stimulating for their own creativity. The criticism mainly concerned that too much of the resources had been spent on the projects organizational aspects.
