Transnational European University Networks on Sustainable Development

Abstract [en]

Through a survey with 32 participating universities in 16 countries across Europe, this thesis investigates to what extent transnational European university networks on sustainable development contribute to the embedding of sustainable development in universities. The networks in question are: COPERNICUS Alliance, Baltic University Programme, Nordic Sustainable Campus Network and UNICA GREEN. The results of the survey show that the networks mostly contribute to sustainable campus operations. Crucial is also the motivation and peer pressure they provide, especially for smaller European countries or countries without national university networks on sustainable development. Furthermore, networks contribute to embedding of sustainable development through the exchange of knowledge, practices and ideas, resulting in inspiration, transnational collaboration and concrete projects. Staff members are involved in the networks in small numbers but work in a variation of faculties and departments and have a strong drive to share practices. A lack of time, staff members, funding, communication and university support are identified difficulties that need to be overcome in order to further strengthen the European networks.
