Body and Soul in the Psalms: A Terminological Study with Anthropological and Theological Implications

Abstract [en]

Rather than dealing exclusively with the Gottesbild (including, for instance, a discussion of anthropomorphic portrayals of YHWH) or the Menschenbild (including a discussion of, for instance, syntheticor theomorphic aspects of biblical anthropology), this study focuses on the relation between human supplicants and YHWH, as expressed in the Psalms. My point of departure is the observation that this relation typically is depicted asanalogous to a relation between two (human) persons with body and soul (or: mind). More precisely, I examine and compare the use of a certain type of vocabulary in the Psalms: lexemes denoting differentbody parts, as well as words denoting various aspects of a person’s inner qualities (“mind”, “soul”, “heart”, etc).
